The Stereotypical Old-West Hero :: American Culture Essays

The Stereotypical Old-West Hero Gunsmoke is a 1950's western series played on CBS radio station during the Vietnam war. It is about a U.S. Marshall named Matt Dillon who is in charge of keeping the law and respect in a town called Dodge City. Each episode has Matt Dillon dealing with problems such as murders, brawls, and gunfights that occur in the Wild West. Matt Dillon is personified as being inquisitive, independent, and not very emotional as a U.S. Marshall. He gives a view of the stereotypical old-west hero. In the series Gunsmoke, Matt Dillon had a very inquisitive nature. Everything that was talked about or anyone that he talked with always was confronted with questions to find out exactly what was going on. He questioned a lot concerning people he did not like. It seemed like when ever a problem or situation came to his attention, or if someone seemed suspicious he would start inquiring more. For example, in the first episode, Matt Dillon is confronted with a person he does not like called Web. He asks his sidekick, Chester, to gather more information about him concerning his past history. As the episode progresses listeners find out that another man wanted to kill Web. On the next story Dillon has to look for an ex-killer in another town. Before he goes on the mission he asks a lot of question such as, "What does this man look like", "When is the last time he was seen", etc. Questioning seems very typical of lawmen back than, and even today. Weather the questions were to start a figh t, or solve a dilemma questioning was a lawmen's best friend. Another point that was noticeable in Gunsmoke was the independence of Dillon. As the listeners hear the stories they cannot help but notice how Mat Dillon only has one partner named Chester. It also seems like Chester is more like Dillon's conscience, bringing up points or making suggestion depending on the circumstances. Near the end of the first story Matt Dillon suggest that Web leave town for a few days. As Chester and Dillon enter the saloon called Long Horn, Dillon turns and tells Chester to wait at the door as he goes after Web. Near the end of the second story Dillon leaves Chester to go tell a woman about her dead husband. In the third story Dillon leaves Chester, and goes after a man called, Pat, to arrest him.

New Deal

The intention of stabilizing the economic capability of a nation is the most significant goal of any leader. However, with President Franklin Roosevelt’s strategy to uk/pros-and-cons-of-fdrs-brainchild-the-new-deal/">implement the New Deal, the nation was not really able to achieve sustainability for a long term. Roosevelt’s main intention was to expand the government’s power to help the sectors which were affected by the great depression. It is true that the federal capability was able to increase its power but with a corresponding irreversible cost. Because of such expansion, additional federal segments were constructed which comprised of what was called the â€Å"alphabet agencies† as stated in Wikipedia. Most of these agencies were not really significant in providing safety measures for people who were directly experiencing economic upheaval. Even the Supreme Court ruled out that a number of those federal offices were constructed unconstitutionally. A number of such departments just contributed to the imperfect allocation of federal funds which greatly affected the national budgetary allowance. A huge portion of wasted money was used for non-performing departments which could have saved the general public some more social welfare funds. One main proof of such wastes is the reduction of these agencies to only a few ones which can still be recognized today. Some of the largest remaining departments still in operation are the Security and Exchange Commission and the Social Security System. These agencies have direct impacts to the public since the former provides registrations for businesses while the latter intends to provide financial and welfare securities for each individual. The New Deal’s bargaining approach in controlling the money supply and the economy in general did not really provided the three R goals-relief, recovery and reform. People were not really relieved from the problematic economic downturn due to misallocation of funds. Recovery was not actually achieved due to the global effects of the Wall Street Crash in 1929. Lastly, reform only produced additional problems in managing the federal government due to the establishment of satellite departments which complicated the governing process. The Gods vs. Man Essay - 1966 Words

The Gods vs. Man God. That one word has a lot of weight to it, doesnt it? It had even more significance to the Greeks. It was something they feared and respected. Throughout history men have always wanted to be like the gods. It is something that is seen over and over, mans universal struggle to be like the gods. Is it mans fault that he wants to be like the gods? Or is it the gods fault? The story Oedipus Rex by Sophocles shows that mans arrogance and fallible personality is the cause of this struggle for superiority. The Greeks dealt the most with gods, melding their daily lives with religion. The Greeks have had multiple Gods over much of their history. The Greeks had one of the†¦show more content†¦More recently, during the time period of Sophocles, the Greeks believed in and listened to the Olympians. There were twelve of these major Gods. These Gods directly influenced the lives of the people of this time. They ruled all parts of peoples lives and were the gods that the people prayed to and listened to. The following passage explains the position of the gods: Gaea created life, but that was life, which was reigned by a brute force. There was no prize for honesty, nor punishment for crime. Guided by their natural aspiration towards the order and ordered society wise men created immortal gods, who governed peoples lives, seeing and hearing everything, and enforcing the laws? The fear of such mighty gods forced the people to place them as far as possible, but also in beautiful settings in order to please them. So, the gods were placed at Mount Olympus and organized as a hierarchical society in which the jet-set consisted of twelve Olympian gods: Zeus, the supreme god, Hera, his lawful wife, Poseidon, Hades, Hestia, Aphrodite, Hermes, Athena, Hephaestus, Ares, Artemis and Apollo. Mount Olympus is placed on the borders of Macedonia and Thessaly. In the central place at Olympus there was Zeuss palace with palaces of other great gods in the vicinity, and palaces of the less important gods further away. Language Is A Building Block For Success - 2137 Words

Assignment 1 – Reading Acquisition Language is a building block for success. It is a simple fact that the more you read, the more you expose your mind to discovery, creativity and imagination. Nelson-Royes, 2012 states that reading is well and truly at the heart of all learning and is a central tool, which connects all other learning areas of the curriculum. Becoming literate is undeniably a critical achievement in today’s society and not only focuses on a child’s ability to read and write but rather their capacity to apply certain skills and knowledge to effectively comprehend and communicate intricacies within the world. The process of reading is multifaceted, which only develops through explicit instruction and practice. Learners must develop a solid foundation of literacy knowledge, which will allow for automaticity and fluency in reading and writing. The basic framework of literacy acquisition can be divided into three main aspects: learning the code, making meaning and thinking critically. These aspects are essential to acquire if students are to become successful literacy learners. The Ministry of Education, 2006, states that at the basic level, learning the code effectively means, developing the skills to encode and decode written forms of language. They furthermore explain that as children become more advanced, they begin to develop and increase their vocabulary, building up to identifying and engaging in more complex structures and features of text. Wilson-Yangs Small Beauty Analysis - 1266 Words

Introduction Small Beauty by Jia Qing Wilson-Yang is about the experiences of Mei, a mixed-race trans woman, who moves from the city to rural modern-day Canada as she deals with past and present trauma. The text is an exploration of personal identity and how one connects with the place they live. Colonization still impacts how people shape their identity today; in Wilson-Yang’s Small Beauty the lasting impacts of colonialization shape how Mei views aspects of her identity through the novel including gender identity and race. First, this essay will set the definitions that set the foundation, second it will explore colonization in relation to Mei’s gender identity, third it will examine the impact of colonialization on Mei’s racial†¦show more content†¦Mei, while drunk ranting to Connie, says â€Å"Blue and Pink! Mei is referencing h ow the transgender flag helps perpetrate the binary system of gender, and Wilson-Yang in writing this scene seems to be referencing how during the process of colonization the gender binary was forced upon other groups who may have had a different belief on gender. Many academics now understand gender is a social construct and colonization enforced the binary system of gender. (Schiwy, 271-274). One can infer Mei is against the binary conceptualization of gender due to how she reacts to the trans pride flag. Also, one can assume that the way Mei grew up would have impacted how she identifies. Being a trans woman is a label that would have been indirectly forced upon her due to the societal norms in the Canada in which she grew up. It can then be applied in a broader context and not just to Mei’s experience in Small Beauty, gender is a complex idea, and many people are starting to understand that the current system in place simplifies gender too much and there are more ways to identify that are just as valid as male and female. The gender binary is not the only aspect of the lasting impact of colonization that affects an individual’s personal identity

Business Statistics Concepts and Applications

Question: Discuss about the Business Statistics for Concepts and Applications. Answer: Introduction At present business world, companies face significant issues in conducting their business competently while fulfilling their corporate social responsibilities and doing business ethically. Corporate social responsibility is an approach of doing business that helps in developing economic, social and environmental condition of the community sustainably (Baumann-Pauly et al. 2013). Here, two business situations are analyzed, where ethical issues are faced and overcome. Business ethics includes appropriate business practices and policies pertaining to potentially controversial issues like insider trading corporate governance, corporate social responsibilities and ethical dilemmas and so on (Ulrich and Sarasin, 2012).While working as a practitioner, I faced issues related to cultural competency. The patient I was looking after belonged to a tribal community and hence, I was unable to understand his needs. He was a patient of hypertension and insomnia and 68 years old and his name was Mr. Jones. I faced the issue, as I did not have appropriate knowledge regarding his culture and language. Tesco, the leading retail organization faced ethical issues for not giving payment to its supplying timely. Moreover, it the company is alleged to conduct payments unethically to the suppliers for ledge promotion. Although, the company is focused on offering best products to customers, however, it failed to fulfill legal requirements related to business ethics. It is found that due to lack of efficiency of the board of Tesco, the half-yearly profit of the company was overstated by 263m, this may be the result of delay in payment to the suppliers (Theguardian.com, 2017). Nature of the situation The situation was very complicated for me, as I had to ask my senior for help in almost every hour, as I could not recognize his requirements properly. According to Homburg et al. (2013), business ethics help people to differentiate between right and wrong. However, being a practitioner, I was not competent enough to handle the situation appropriately by overcoming the issue related to cultural sensitivity. The issue faced by Tesco is associated to financial management, which is related to short deliveries comprising burden of penalties, customer complaint, invoice discrepancies, supposition of unknown items, inference for advertising fixed cost and historic promotion (Theguardian.com, 2017). Impact of challenges faced in the situation on the stakeholders As I was unable to understand the need of the Mr. Jones, hence, sometimes it became difficult for me to provide appropriate service within proper time. Due to which, he felt helpless and he was reluctant to communicate with me. He needed proper care and effective communication with his care worker, who could help him to release his tension and made him feel comfortable and safe. I could recognize that he became more tensed and restless, when he was unable to make me understand about his needs and expectations. As, I was unable to provide him proper care, therefore, I was becoming under confident regarding my role and responsibility. Due to the ethical issue faced by Tesco in delaying payment to the suppliers, the company had to bear significant penalty under the Groceries Code Adjudicator (GCA). The organization imposes penalty up to 1% to the yearly turnover of big retailers. For breaching the GCA code, the name of Tesco came into accounting scandal that is harmful for the reputation and brand image of Tesco. Moreover, for not giving payment on time, business relationship with supplier could not be managed properly, which may harm the overall performance of the firm (Theguardian.com, 2017). Processes of overcoming the situation As stated by Baker and Comer (2012), learning cultural competency has become essential for nurses at resent day, as people belong to different cultural background come to hospitals for treatment. Without having knowledge regarding cultural competency, it is not possible provide effective services to the care users and attain their satisfaction. The social learning theory stipulates people are likely to do things that provide them self-worth. Hence, for overcoming the difficulties, I started focusing on increasing my knowledge regarding tribal community, their language and social norms so that I could improve my service provided to Mr. Jones. First, I started learning tribal language for increasing effectiveness of the conversation between Mr. Jones and me. Eventually, I was able to understand his expectation from me, and provide him care accordingly. Thus, I regained my self-confidence. In order to deal with the situation, the company must identify and fulfil the regulations and codes imposed by GCA. Utilitarianism theory states that a business action is considered as right if it creates positive outcomes on the stakeholders (Berenson et al. 2012). Hence, Tesco can apply this theory for assessing future risks and taking necessary decisions. Therefore, Tesco had taken necessary measures for dealing with the ethical issue effectively. The company has changed the way of dealing with its suppliers. Furthermore, Tesco announced that, it would continue full cooperation with GCA so that it can conduct its business ethically in present and future (Theguardian.com, 2017). Conclusion In order to deal with ethical issues effectively, it is essential for companies and employees to comply with all the legislations related business ethics. It any help them to improve overall quality and productivity. References Baker, S.D. and Comer, D.R., 2012.
